Recent News Part 2: the future of XI and the start of XIV

So, the update news was interesting but no one was really listening other than to the following

ZOMG LEVEL 99 !11!1!!!!eleventyone!!

Yep, that’s right. From June, the level cap will be raised from 75, in stages, to 99. So by the end of the year, if we haven’t all quit, jumped to XIV or whatever, we could all be level 99.

My first reaction to this was pretty much ‘oh’. I didn’t see it coming but it didn’t enormously upset me.  However there has been a huge reaction to it and that’s what stunned me.  One of my linkshell members promptly quit… at least for now. Others were furious, some were excited and the rest of us were a bit ‘Ummm…’

No, this does not negate everything you have done before.  Repeat: it does not negate everything you have already done.

I don’t think they handled this well, I think they should have waved some examples of how you progress with your current shinies, to the new shinies. Not show screenshots of a WHM in full relic, converting. Or at least that’s what it looks like.

WHM Converting?

The way I see it is, they were going to have to release some new event. The new event would have new shinies, new shinies often replace old shinies.

I can understand why people are dreading levelling again, especially as the amount of xp may be ridiculous. I hope in some ways, it isn’t universal and it’s just restricted to the newer areas, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if that’s possible. We all know Square Enix could mess this up good and proper but I hope that they haven’t. The quotation below is from the official site

Level Cap Increase
History is about to be made as the level cap will be increased starting with the version update scheduled for this summer! The increase will take place in stages until the new maximum, level 99, has been reached.

Up until now, character strength has been limited to level 75, and additions to the game such as monsters, strategic content, and equipment had been designed to correspond to this.

However, with the game having reached a certain level of maturity and the bulk of existing notorious monsters having already fallen prey to tenacious bands of adventurers, the development team has deemed that the time is now ripe for the bar to be raised.

Level Cap Considerations

We are aware that players will inevitably feel concern over how in-game elements such as support jobs, experience camps, and merit points will be affected by this change. We would like to take a moment to explain the measures that are in the pipes to preserve game balance.

Support job abilities that are not expected to steal the limelight from main jobs as a result of the level cap increase will be allowed to come into play. Furthermore, there are plans to tweak certain job abilities, job traits, and magic spells on an ongoing basis in order to further accentuate the uniqueness of each job when used in a main role, as well as its versatility when playing a supporting role.

New camping grounds are scheduled to be added to cater to the anticipated rise in demand for experience parties. Furthermore, the redistribution of monsters in existing areas is also under consideration.

An increase in maximum upgrades is being considered for existing merit point skills and attributes. Preparations are also under way for the introduction of a new type of merit point for players who have reached the new level 99 summit.

Then there’s the new realm mentioned… now I’m confused as to whether Abyssea is something to do with the Walk of Echoes or is something completely different. Looking at the timeline, I think they may be connected, guess if we’re all playing by June, we’ll see then.

Pics seem to illustrate mobs which are robotic and/or sea like and new relic style armour.

PLD and SCH I’d guess.

Abolition of Promathia level caps…

This is the one that actually pisses me off. I don’t honestly know why. I didn’t see it initially. Does this mean that these levels will still contain monsters that are suitable for a 50ish party say in Sacrarium or are they going to raise the level of the mobs inside?

I can see subligar hunting, swift belts and missions being one hell of a lot easier. Along with Soboros,  voyager sallets etc etc I don’t think it’s such a bad thing but this is one place where I feel it’s unnecessary. Dunno, maybe I have too much of a CoP Mission mentality. I hope they don’t uncap the battles but I guess it will mean the zones will get used more, potentially for level 40+ sub levelling?

Secret Bonus Stage

Well it begins. The emails have gone out for the first round of testers for XIV. The Alpha test is going ahead from the 11th March.

With the eagerly anticipated FINAL FANTASY XIV drawing ever nearer its beta test phase, we are excited to announce that we will be conducting a closed alpha test—exclusive to our loyal FINAL FANTASY XI users! Those who have been selected as beta testers can expect to receive further information starting from Monday, March 1. * The tester website is scheduled to go live on Thursday, March 11.

Those who were not selected in this drawing, fear not, for there will be other opportunities to come. Be sure to stay tuned!

That’s all I’m going to say on the subject really. I am aware of several people who have been accepted onto the Alpha. I’m still in two minds whether I want to play XIV and even now… XI. We’ll see.
